A Church After the Pattern of the Early Church
MPC is modeled after the organic structure of Acts — simple, relational, and rooted in the Word.
Marathon Presbyterian Church was incorporated in Florida in late 2021 and began gathering in January 2022. We are a house church network in Marathon — often called the heart of the Florida Keys — serving the Middle Keys with a decentralized, elder-led structure that meets in homes.
From the beginning, MPC has sought to keep discipleship, evangelism, biblical teaching, organic leadership training, unity, godly administration, mission, and love at the forefront of our life together as a local expression of the family of God.

Story
How MPC Took Shape
- Late 2021 Local residents incorporated Marathon Presbyterian Church in Florida around a shared conviction: the church can thrive in homes through Word, prayer, and shared life.
- January 2022 The first gatherings began. Worship is led simply with guitar and voice. Hymns are chosen first for their theology.
- Present We remain a small congregation by design — intimate enough for real conversation, hospitality, and the training of emerging leaders in the ordinary life of the church.
History
From Acts to the Keys
- New Testament The earliest Christians devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, fellowship, breaking bread, and prayer. Households often hosted the church’s life and leadership.
- Early centuries For generations, believers gathered in homes — a simple, adaptable pattern that fostered intimacy, hospitality, and multiplication.
- Reformation renewals When the gospel needed room to take root again, homes and small societies often became outposts for Scripture, mutual care, and shared obedience.
- MPC, 2021–present In Marathon we recover that household pattern: elder-led, Word-centered, and free to grow without depending on a campus. For the research behind this approach, see Resources.

How We Use These Words
- House church An intentional Christian community gathering in a private dwelling for worship, Scripture, prayer, fellowship, and mission — church in full, not a midweek add-on.
- House church network Two or more house churches walking together under shared confession and elder care, with room to multiply as God grows the work.
- Organic leadership Leaders formed through mentor-apprentice relationships, shared life, and spiritual disciplines — grown among us, not hired as platform personalities.
Context
Why a House Church in the Keys
The Florida Keys present unique challenges for church planting: a high cost of living, a small and often transitory population, and limits on construction. Churches that depend on large facilities and tourist giving can struggle to remain solvent here.
A house church network is a fitting expression of faithfulness in this place — low overhead, high relationship, and room to multiply without waiting on a campus. The home is not a lesser venue. In the New Testament, households were often the setting where the church learned, prayed, and grew.
Our missional mandate is carried forward by organically training future house church pastors — low-cost, relational, and suited to the realities of life in the Keys.
Leadership
Elders Who Pastor House Churches
- Elders are house church pastors At MPC, every elder pastors within the house church network — just as oversight and household leadership were joined in the early church. We do not separate “board elders” from those who shepherd the flock in the home.
- Organic Leadership Training Organic Leadership Training is not only a research project — it is practiced in our network. Members are developed for real ministry: prayer, teaching, hospitality, outreach, and the skills needed to lead a house church faithfully.
- Future house church pastors We train future house church pastors organically — through mentor-apprentice relationships, shared life, spiritual disciplines, and supervised ministry — not by waiting on a platform career path.
- Priesthood of believers Every Christian is called to serve. A simpler church environment lowers the barrier for emerging leaders and makes room for gifts to be exercised for the good of the body.
Membership
Formation and the BCFK Library
- Trained for ministry Life in the house church is meant to make members more effective in ministry — in the home, the neighborhood, and the wider Keys.
- BCFK library access Members of Marathon Presbyterian Church receive access to the library of the Bible College of the Florida Keys — a resource for Scripture study, theology, and ministry readiness.
- Shared aim MPC and BCFK share a conviction: leaders and servants should be formed by the Word for real work in the church, not merely for attendance at events.
What We Are Not
MPC is not a midweek small group attached to a larger Sunday campus. Each gathering is church — worship, teaching, fellowship, prayer, and mission in a household setting. We are also not anti-institutional for its own sake. We simply believe that a simpler structure better serves discipleship, hospitality, and leadership development here in the Keys.
